In early November, Westwood Administrator Bob Hoffmann saw something that struck a chord and brought the country’s economic troubles home.

Standing at the back steps of borough hall, he noticed an elderly couple walking towards the building. They were dressed formally, the man in a blue blazer, dress shirt and tie and as they made their way up the steps they spoke with each other in hushed tones.

Gaming together for a cause

For a few hours on a Thursday night, the students at Emerson High School came together for a single purpose – to honor the recent passing of Thomas Carlis and Kevin Beattie. The school cafeteria was filled to the brim with students – but not for a school dance, dinner, or concert. The students had come for a video game tournament, in memory of Thomas and Kevin and as a fundraiser for both families.

The idea for the tournament was hatched up by three Emerson students – Omran Fallah, Jake Blankenship, and Kyle Doughty.
