Council rejects one-way road proposal

(by Kimberly Redmond - September 10, 2008)

On Sept. 8, the township council decided to drop the proposal presented by several residents to create a one-way road from Brookside Avenue onto Roberge Drive.

Following the initial proposal made by several residents in the neighborhood adjacent to Roberge Drive, the council authorized the police department to conduct a traffic study of the area. The police concluded that the creation of a thoroughfare in the neighborhood was not recommended.

At the Aug. 25 township council meeting, neighborhood residents had presented a petition proposing the construction of the one-way road in create greater convenience in entering their neighborhood.

Residents of Doretta Street, Caruso Lane, Baker Court, Bergen Place and Roberge Drive can only gain access to their properties through Doretta Street and Bergen Place off of Westwood Avenue. The distance to some residents’ driveway increased when Caruso Lane was made into a one-way street permitting right turns only. Neighborhood residents have had to circle the block to gain access to their properties if coming from Rivervale Road.

Despite rejecting the idea, Mayor Joe Blundo and the council commended the citizens for coming forward with a proposal.

“I think it is good that both sides were heard,” said Councilwoman Denise Sieg.
