PTA recognized for excellence
(by Kathryn A. Burger - September 12, 2008)
For the second time, the Parent-Teacher Association of the
River
Vale
School District has earned national recognition from the National PTA.
The district’s PTA serves Woodside and Roberge elementary schools and
Holdrum
Middle School and each has been certified as a “Parent Involvement School of Excellence.” The schools were first certified in 2005 for a three-year term. This most recent honor is also for a three-year term.
The certification process is a lengthy one that requires the cooperation and dedication of teams of parents, teachers a community members in each school. These teams had the task of educating their school about the National Standards that must be met and conducted a school and community survey and created a, “Parent Involvement Plan,” based on the results.
The teams then chose from two possible designations: a “Recognition of Commitment” or the highest level available, the “Certification of Excellence.” Their choice was based on the results of their self-assessment. Each chose to apply for the highest distinction.
River Vale PTA President Rachel McGouran said, “Schools that attain parent involvement certification show a strong dedication to student achievement and a welcoming attitude toward families. Certification is mark of excellence.”
Superintendent David C. Verducci said, “Our ability to maintain such high levels of achievement in our school district is dependent in no small part upon the direct involvement of our parents and community members.”
The River Vale PTA was established in 1974. Among its initiatives are book fairs; D.A.R.E; the “Writers’ Symposium”; the popular “Journey on Saturday” program; Kindergarten Buddies” and a Health & Safety Program. They also sponsor Candidates’ Nights, and welcome guest speakers to their meetings.
The National PTA, founded in 1897, is the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the . PTA members include parents, educators, students and other citizens active in their schools and communities. Membership in the PTA, a not-for-profit organization, is open to anyone who is concerned with education, health and welfare of children and youth.
