D.A.R.E. Bike-A-Thon scheduled for Oct. 19
(by Kathryn A. Burger - October 01, 2008)
On Sunday, Oct. 19, the Park Ridge Police Department D.A.R.E. program will sponsor its seventh annual Bike-A-Thon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The parking lot at the Park Ridge Swim Club on Colony Avenue and the streets in the vicinity will be used for the event. The pre-set course is more than a half-mile long and will be monitored by uniformed
Park Ridge police officers. The event is open to all area residents.
D.A.R.E. Officer Scott Malloy said, “This is a fun event that kids and family members can participate in together to raise fund to support our local D.A.R.E. program. Those who have attended our previous bike-a-thons may remember that we have landed helicopters in the past. This year, we are planning a couple of other surprises.”
Participants sign up sponsors to pledge a specific amount for each mile they ride their bikes. Every participant will receive a Bike-A-Thon T-shirt. Each participant will earn a raffle ticket for every $10 they raise. The raffle tickets can be used as chances on a number of prizes, including bicycles.
The department will also be conducting free bicycle safety checks with the assistance of CycleSport bicycle shop. Malloy said, “We will also be registering bicycles for residents at no cost. This registration helps police identify bicycles in the event that they are lost or stolen.”
The D.A.R.E. program in
Park Ridge started in 1989 and is funded entirely by donations from local residents ad businesses. Malloy said, “Without their support, we would not be able to have such a positive impact on the children of
Park Ridge .”
All the money raised from the bike-a-thon will be used to continue the program’s activities, including a number of events such at the New Jersey Devils’ Hockey Night, a summer pool party and the year-end D.A.R.E. graduation, and other events.
