Seniors to visit Yiddish theatre on Thursday Dec. 4
Township of Washington – The National Yiddish Theatre’s presentation of Gimpl Tam (Gimpl the Fool) is the destination of the Bergen County YJCC’s Senior Department on Thursday, Dec. 4. Participation is open to anyone who might enjoy this new musical written and directed by Moshe Yassur based on the story by Nobel Lauriate Isaac Bashevis Singer.
The group will depart for the Manhattan JCC from the YJCC, 605 Pascack Road, Township of Washington , at 11 a.m. and return at approximately 5:30 p.m. Bus transportation, a kosher lunch and the performance are included in the price of $73 for YJCC members and $78 for non-members. Registration and payment must be received by Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Gimpl Tam is the story of a gullible man who is constantly the victim of tricks played on him by his fellow townspeople. But Gimpl is a “wise fool” who comes to terms with truths about love, evil and faith. The story is a classic of Yiddish literature, published in that language in 1945 and translated to English, by Saul Bellow, in 1953. The theater production is in Yiddish with English and Russian subtitles.
