Brittany Hines-Hill wins international vocal competition

On Aug. 14, Brittany Hines-Hill placed first in the Meistersing Opera Competition held in
Graz, Austria.
Hines-Hill, 22, a senior at Westminster Choir College of Rider University, Lawrenceville, participated in the American
Institute of
Musical Studies ’ six-week intensive vocal program in
Graz this summer. The program, instructed by an international faculty of voice teachers, coaches and guest lecturers, culminates in the Meistersinger Opera Competition.
She competed against some 60 operatically trained singers, some 15 years her senior. The first round of the competition narrowed the field to 25, who participated in the semi-finals. The field was then reduced to eight finalists, both men and women.
Each finalist performed with a 90-piece orchestra for a panel of judges who had not heard them sing before. Among the panelists was Ileana Cotrubas, lyrical soprano of
Vienna, . Hines-Hill, a soprano, sang, “Dich, Teure Halle,” as
Elizabeth from Richard Wagner’s “Tannhauser.” She is one of the youngest winners in the competition’s 28-year history.
A graduate of
Pascack
Valley
High School , Hines-Hill will complete her undergraduate degree this year in the studio of Mark Moliterno at
Westminster .
